This is an obvious work of anti-German propaganda. But in spite of this it is well cited with many contemporary sources. If you are a historian of this period you will get a wide ranging list of references.
For the casual reader, this book was written in 1916. There is little about the battles that had already harvested the young men of Europe. This work is intended to show how the Germans schemed to take the minor event of the assassination of the Arch Duke and force a general war. The reasons given include the rise of German militarism, the feeling of being hemmed in by the British empire, and the increasing pride in their nation.
War in general is a waste of men and resources, but WWI was particularly wasteful, so much was lost for so little gain by either side, and even worse it was the seed of an even greater war in less than 20 years.

What Germany Thinks; Or the War as Germans See It Thomas F a 1875 Smith 9781371687502 Books Reviews

i think this will be an amazing and fasinating book. im really exited to read this and i say 5 stars because i read the authors comment and it sounded very well done. apparently i have not read this book forth on very well my readers … *·*
This book attempts to place the blame for WWI solely on Germany. This book does nothing to untangle the complex events that led to WWI. The fact that several books with a theme of hatred against Germans are being dragged up out of history raises alarm. Who is trying to sell hatred of Germans to the public and why are they attempting to do this? Has anyone else noticed this trend? Citizens beware!

This book focuses on vilifying Germany and Germans for provoking war. In paragraph after paragraph Germans are accused of atrocities. It is only worth getting if it is free and is only worth studying as a work of war propaganda.

Why would anyone bring back this useless book of WWI propaganda which places all blame on Germany, arguably the strongest political and economic power in the EU today? Who has an interest in discrediting Germany and Germans? Who benefits from this villianization of Germans?

When are we going to learn the truth about the secret dirty deeds that caused WWI and WWII?

In case anyone misses this book of propaganda, there are 3 editions of this book on ranging in price from $0 - $11.24.
My hopes were.high, but I did not find it very interesting or readable. It sounded like a personal diatribe. Sorry.
gave no guidance about this book's contents.
I was hoping the book would contain an unbiased account of the thinking of the German people during the first year of WWI. Instead, it seems to be an extensive analysis of the German press during the same period.
After a lengthy attack of Germany's Social Democratic Party. The author pointed out their unwavering loyalty to self-interest in contrast to party idealogy or the cause of peace.
There is an overall bias toward Britain and the hapless Belgium in this book (as far as I have read). It's a model of propaganda, for it's time, in the guise of an objective study. As propaganda reporting on other propaganda it succeeded in it's task. But it's boring, Oh, so boring.
The heading about sums it up. Germany is responsible for the war, Germans commit atrocities, Germans are thoroughly bad....unlike the wonderful British. Coincidentally enough, the author is British. As the title indicates, this book isn't even honest about it's dreary prejudices. Even for free, it isn't worth the price.
This work offers the reader an look at the events and history of the period through the eyes of the "other side". During such a period as a World War, one's focus is invariably on his own interests and the events as they affect him. Seldom do we give thought to those same forces of history and how they are perceived by the "enemy". This novel affords the reader a clear and concise view of those circumstances as they were seen by the average German citizen, Nazi or not.
